WHAT TO DO IN KETCHIKAN IN ONE DAY

Alaska is unique and rugged, and it is hard to pack everything into a short visit. Here are a few recommendations of things to see while you’re in Ketchikan.

Ketchikan is the southeastern-most city in Alaska, and it’s also arguably the most beautiful city in the state. Known for being the “Salmon Capital of the World,” this city on a hill is also one of the most walkable you will find. Tourists will delight in all there is to do here in Ketchikan. Here are 9 places and activities to visit that can easily fit into your budget and timeframe.

  • Ketchikan Walking Tour – Look up the historical society’s “Free Walking Tour.” The route takes you on a tour of downtown Ketchikan’s “must see” attractions. The map includes over 60 points of interest, all accessible on foot. Visit the Ketchikan Gateway Borough’s website for more details (https://www.visit-ketchikan.com/en/Things-To-Do/Tours-Sightseeing).

  • Totem Poles – When you come to Ketchikan, you are visiting the land of the Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian peoples. Alaska Native art is distinctive and worth seeing. Ketchikan is a community with the world’s largest collection of totem poles. There are a number of famous poles downtown. If you want to visit the historic villages, you can go south to see Saxman or head north to visit Totem Bight.

  • Misty Fjords National Monument – The Misty Fjords is a National Monument and wilderness area administered by the US Forest Service. The Fjords were formed by glacial activity some 60 million years ago. As the glaciers moved, they cut vast fjords through the short mountain range stretching through Southeast Alaska. This activity helped create the archipelago that defines Southeast’s beautiful topography. The Alexander Archipelago stretches 300 miles from Juneau to the Queen Charlotte Islands and contains approximately 1,100 islands. The “Inside Passage” is the popular term for the route most cruise ships take as they steam north through SE Alaska
